Meeting Summary:
Janette Inglewood led Week 5 of the Magistrate course, focusing on Gorean laws and their practical application, particularly within an SL (Second Life) context. She provided participants with "law cards" compiled by Scribe Luther, emphasizing their reliability as direct extracts from Gorean books. While memorization isn't expected, familiarity is crucial, and Janette reiterated that City law always takes precedence.
The class discussed specific laws and their nuances:
Law 1 (City Walls/Sim Boundaries): Janette explained that in Olni, city laws extend to the entire sim (simulating "beyond the walls"), even if not entirely "back to books" (BTB). This was a practical decision due to people committing crimes outside the immediate city walls, which would otherwise fall under merchant law.
Law 2 (Claiming Land): Sim owners are generally not keen on players claiming land, requiring Magistrates to be careful in applying this law.
Commonly Used Laws: Janette noted that in her experience as a Magistrate, slave laws are the most frequently invoked, followed by Free Woman (FW) laws. She clarified that while men often instigate disputes related to women's behavior or slave ownership, it's the female characters themselves whose actions lead to legal situations.
Enslavement of Free Women (Laws 83 & 84): A significant portion of the discussion centered on the fine line between "insulting/disrespecting" a man (which is not a legal ground for enslavement of a FW from the same Homestone, per Law 83) and "conduct indicating suitability for the collar" (which is, per Law 84). Janette emphasized the need for Magistrates to warn FWs about boundaries and the "feel" of a city's customs (e.g., veiling).
Discussion on Dealing with Difficult Individuals:
FW causing prolonged drama: Janette advised treating persistent drama as an OOC "rules issue" (e.g., violating a sim's "act nicely" clause), potentially leading to a ban or, humorously, beheading.
Berating a Magistrate: If someone berates a Magistrate after an unfavorable decision, the Magistrate can advise them to appeal to the Ubar. If the abuse crosses into OOC territory, it becomes a rules issue, potentially leading to muting or banning.
Role of Red Caste/Warriors in Court: Loki Greymoon suggested having a Red Caste member (Warrior) in court to maintain peace, even in low-profile cases, which Janette agreed with, noting they could "hold them in contempt" or use a whip if someone is a "loudmouth."
The class concluded with Janette urging participants to review the law scrolls and announcing the next session for the following week.

[13:04] janette Inglewood: now, this is a list of gorean laws.......lifted from tthe books by the Scribe Luther
[13:04] janette Inglewood: i have checked the source for many
[13:05] janette Inglewood: and i find them very reliable
[13:06] janette Inglewood: most good Cities...reflect these in their own laws
[13:06] Charles Esharham nods
[13:06] janette Inglewood: and they are laws....not rules
[13:08] janette Inglewood: You will find You get to know the common ones
[13:08] janette Inglewood: nobody expects You to memorise them all
[13:09] janette Inglewood: more...be familiar with them
[13:09] Gilbert Froobert: nods
[13:10] janette Inglewood: of course...keep it handy
[13:11] janette Inglewood: and remember City law comes first
[13:11] janette Inglewood: now...Law 1
[13:12] janette Inglewood: the walls thing
[13:13] janette Inglewood: it tends to be the case that City laws extend......
[13:13] janette Inglewood: for he whole sim on SL
[13:14] janette Inglewood: not btb i admit
[13:15] janette Inglewood: and not the case everywhere
[13:15] janette Inglewood: it is true in Olni though
[13:16] janette Inglewood: we found we had to
[13:17] janette Inglewood: what gorean places may be outside a City but have their laws?
[13:17] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: gsnaduwpd
[13:18] Bernhard Madsen: outposts
[13:18] janette Inglewood: yes
[13:18] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: banner keeps
[13:18] janette Inglewood: exactly
[13:19] Bernhard Madsen: (I am a stupid Dane, what is a "banner keeps")
[13:20] Bernhard Madsen: (?)
[13:20] Quiet Clarity: You are a Great Dane!
[13:20] Quiet Clarity: I did not mean it the way it came out.
[13:20] janette Inglewood: so.......we have our laws extend to the whole sim....because people were going out to the docks to commit crimes
[13:21] janette Inglewood: which would fall under merchant law anyway
[13:21] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "wow.. so they were trying to exploit the loopholes eh?"
[13:21] janette Inglewood: a banner keep...a guarded trading post
[13:21] janette Inglewood: yes Volmarr
[13:21] Bernhard Madsen: ok
[13:22] janette Inglewood: in the end our Ubar made me
[13:23] janette Inglewood: i sort ofd isagree really...but i know why it makes sense
[13:24] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "didn't they have Preators to watch the docks?"
[13:25] janette Inglewood: same as Law 2.....sim Owners, will not be keen on You claiming land
[13:25] janette Inglewood laughs
[13:26] janette Inglewood: so You see...we need some care with these laws
[13:26] janette Inglewood: yes bu nobody wants to rp a wharf Praetor Volmarr
[13:27] janette Inglewood: too boring
[13:27] VolmarrGoth Vollmar smirks
[13:27] janette Inglewood: so..i am that in effect
[13:28] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "ya it seems difficult to make all the Magistrate functions all specialized in Sl Gor"
[13:29] janette Inglewood: i find in normal ay o ay business....slave laws are the most commonly used
[13:29] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "lots of disputes over slaves then?"
[13:29] janette Inglewood: eeek....day to day
[13:29] janette Inglewood: yes....agree Charles?
[13:30] janette Inglewood: and then FW laws second
[13:30] Nitya Burckhardt: @
[13:31] Charles Esharham: I agree Jan.
[13:31] janette Inglewood: in fact females all round
[13:31] janette Inglewood: Froukje?
[13:31] Nitya Burckhardt: I know this may sound, odd, as a question, but do Praetors and Prefects have to go through trainings as well for their postions?
[13:31] janette Inglewood: yes
[13:32] janette Inglewood: hmmm changes tag
[13:32] Nitya Burckhardt: Interesting, thank you Lady
[13:32] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "so females are making most the drama are they? haha"
[13:33] Quiet Clarity: Impossible!
[13:33] janette Inglewood: there.....i am in fact Prefect of Olni
[13:33] AutumnSilk Charisma: i have never heard of a Prefect
[13:33] Nitya Burckhardt can think of a particular Rarius that seems good at as well.....
[13:33] janette Inglewood: well...Men make the fuss about Women
[13:34] janette Inglewood: ownership of slaves.........FW behaviour....etc
[13:35] janette Inglewood: in 2 years as a Magistrate i can say these are the regular issues
[13:36] janette Inglewood: You will find You learn those laws quickly
[13:36] janette Inglewood: now...in SL we have many many slaves
[13:37] janette Inglewood: more than a balance from the books really
[13:38] janette Inglewood: so......i am not in the business of adding to their ranks with FW
[13:39] janette Inglewood: one area.......is behaviour
[13:40] janette Inglewood: now...if She is acting slavish.......fine...She needs a collar
[13:40] Nitya Burckhardt quietly excuses herself from class
[13:40] janette Inglewood: that just makes it hard for the rest of us
[13:40] Belle Ivorymage moves quietly out
[13:42] janette Inglewood: but You cant collar a FW of Your own Homestone...just because She annoys You
[13:43] janette Inglewood: 83. There is no law that states a man may enslave a free woman of his Home Stone because she has insulted or disrespected him.
[13:44] janette Inglewood: this can be quite a tricky area
[13:44] janette Inglewood: 84. Free women may be legally enslaved if they engage in "conduct indicating suitability for the collar."
[13:45] janette Inglewood: there is quite a thin line between these 2
[13:46] Gilbert Froobert: nods
[13:46] janette Inglewood: most good FW know the difference
[13:47] janette Inglewood: and as Magistrates so must we
[13:48] janette Inglewood: i have the authority to order Men in effect
[13:49] janette Inglewood: of course,,,how i do it has to be very tactful
[13:49] janette Inglewood: i know my place as a FW
[13:50] janette Inglewood: and so it should be for all FW...of course we can express opinions...we are not slaves
[13:50] janette Inglewood: but do i wih respect
[13:51] janette Inglewood: i suggest as Magistrates You warn he Woman clearly.....where he boundaries lie
[13:51] janette Inglewood: *the
[13:52] janette Inglewood: give Her a chance to get the feel of Your City's views
[13:52] janette Inglewood: as in veil or no veil........etc
[13:52] janette Inglewood: any questions?
[13:53] janette Inglewood: i suggest You read the scrolls before next week
[13:53] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "what is the best way to deal with a FW who creates intense and prolonged drama and hides behind the laws as an excuse to get away with it?"
[13:54] Loki Greymoon: 0chop off her head
[13:54] Loki Greymoon: sorry
[13:54] janette Inglewood: i would start to see that as a rules thing
[13:55] janette Inglewood: persistent drama becomes a rules issue
[13:55] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "but if she is not violating any paricular rules.. just making drama and always arguing over why she is in the right in all she does.. etc.. "
[13:55] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "ah.. what rules?"
[13:55] janette Inglewood: then maybe chop off Her head
[13:55] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "haha"
[13:56] Loki Greymoon: winks at Jan'
[13:56] janette Inglewood: City/sim rules
[13:56] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "I mean as a Magistrate though"
[13:56] janette Inglewood: as in ooc.....causing drama
[13:56] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "ah.. "
[13:56] janette Inglewood: umm well...if She is breaking no laws...then no
[13:57] janette Inglewood: we have an...act nicely clause
[13:57] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "good clause"
[13:57] janette Inglewood: in our rules of the sim
[13:58] janette Inglewood: right....lets close there
[13:58] Loki Greymoon: thinks dang now i need to be nice aswell as kind
[13:58] janette Inglewood: please familiarise Yourselves wih the law scroll
[13:58] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "what is the way to deal with FW.. or really anyone.. who derates you as a Magistrate because you do not decide in their favor in situations.. "
[13:58] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: *berates
[13:59] Loki Greymoon: chop off thier head works for me V
[13:59] janette Inglewood: oh.......i tell them to appeal to the Ubar
[13:59] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "ah"
[13:59] janette Inglewood: as is their right
[13:59] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "but what if they are talking abusely to you as a result of this?"
[14:00] Bernhard Madsen: "would that not be the reason for another court case?"4
[14:00] janette Inglewood: He has 3 days to respond
[14:00] janette Inglewood: again..abuse....becomes a rules issue
[14:00] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "ah!"
[14:01] janette Inglewood: yes...You could Bernhard....but abuse goes beyond IC
[14:01] Bernhard Madsen: "Sure, but there may be borderline cases, that would justify it as IC"
[14:02] janette Inglewood: yes i have had angry criminals...but if abusive...i mute them..or get them banned
[14:02] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "the problem tends to be borderline cases and such"
[14:02] AutumnSilk Charisma: couldn't you bring them in front of the High Council
[14:03] Loki Greymoon: @
[14:03] janette Inglewood: yes sure.
[14:03] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "so if it is intense abuse and they think they can since it is IC they can still get in trouble for it OOC as abuse?"
[14:03] janette Inglewood: Loki?
[14:03] janette Inglewood: yes Volmarr
[14:04] Loki Greymoon: as a Red CAptain i thik it is a good thing to have a red in court to keep the peace so to speak even in low profile cases to some what back up the Magistrate
[14:04] janette Inglewood: yes i agree
[14:04] janette Inglewood: 5 if possible
[14:05] VolmarrGoth Vollmar smiles.. "does that mean you can have him beat up unrully people?"
[14:05] janette Inglewood laughs
[14:05] janette Inglewood: yes!
[14:05] Loki Greymoon: if the person get to lippy shall we say most time a sword will hut them up when it at your throught
[14:06] VolmarrGoth Vollmar: "even in the case of FW?"
[14:06] janette Inglewood: hold them in contempt
[14:06] Loki Greymoon: even then
[14:06] janette Inglewood: or a whip
[14:06] Loki Greymoon: show me a woman that wont shut up with a sword to her throught ill show you a FW with out a head
[14:07] VolmarrGoth Vollmar smirks
[14:07] janette Inglewood: i have no time for loud mouths in court
[14:07] Loki Greymoon: just my humble oppinion
[14:07] AutumnSilk Charisma laughs," cus i would be beheaded fast
[14:08] janette Inglewood: it is a serious matter and ruins the rp
[14:08] janette Inglewood: right i have to run...well done all and thank You
[14:08] AutumnSilk Charisma: thank Lady Jan
